There is a page in Naomi Kashiwagi's portfolio dedicated by her performance Puffing Crossing Carousel, in which I took part last November (2014), with a rather nice couple of pictures from the performance. In November 2014 I took part in a public performance called Puffin Crossing Carousel by north west artist Naomi Kashiwagi. This was a performance inspired by the final scene of Jacques Tati's Playtime, and formed part of the opening events for the final exhibition at Manchester's landmark arts venue Cornerhouse, also called Playtime and inspired by Tati's playful dystopian vision of modern life. Cornerhouse is not closing after this but moving to a new, larger purpose-built building, joining forces with Manchester's former Library Theatre (which has been homeless and borrowing unusual spaces and the Lowry's Quays theatre since its home in Manchester's Central Library became unavailable due to major redevelopment of the library) and becoming HOME.
To help her realise her vision for this live performance on the crossroads outside the Cornerhouse building, Naomi joined forces with dancer, choreographer and visual theatre director Benji Reid, who ran the movement workshops and helped the performers devise their individual and group choreography for the event. As someone with a major interest in dance but far from a dancer, this was a remarkable opportunity and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Benji is an energetic, expressive, thoughtful and inspiring teacher. Having parked Puffin Crossing Carousel as a wonderful experience - while still looking forward to the anticipated slide carousel of images from the performance to be installed in the gallery alongside Naomi's other piece of work created for Playtime - I was pleased and surprised to get a message at Christmas from Benji asking if he could take my portrait. I was aware that he had a side-interest in photography, but this was entirely unexpected. So, a date was arranged. Benji had a clear set of ideas what he wanted to achieve and this is the first result... |
