Having a clear out of my document drive and I have come across the specification for the very first performance work that I created. It was never performed and, when I created it in 2011 - amazingly - it never really occurred to me that it would be. I was simply enjoying the events I had been involved in at that time and starting to build up a set of regular contacts (friends and acquaintances) who would also appear at the same (slightly more involved and involving nudity) public-participation art events that I was starting to seek out. That enjoyment resulted in me attempting to create something. (Bear in mind that my interest in dance was also inspiring me to write the synopsis of a new classical-style narrative ballet - also never completely finished and no anticipation of it ever being performed.) I did, rather naively, send my performance proposal to the Whitworth Art Gallery - before its closure and transformation into The Whitworth - which had a couple of spaces that I imagined would be ideal, especially after having seen some work by Siobhan Davies Dance there. I never received a response. Probably not unexpectedly. It would be 2014 before my ideas and confidence matured enough and I dared to think of submitting a performance proposal. In fact, this first effort was almost forgotten. And then I found it. ironically, maybe inevitably, it now appears to be an odd mix of simplicity and ambition. The idea is basically simple, with layers of ideas to mask that simplicity. And for 30-50 people? Blimey. Shaping and growing, from little more than a roll of tape, these brightly coloured mummies emerge, stumbling and waddling in a slow-mo game of follow-my-leader. Haphazard 2015 |
